**We all love the idea of glowing, smooth, glass-like skin. And the skincare world is full of powerful ingredients—Retinol, Vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs. But here’s a question I get all the time at the clinic:**
**“Can I use them all together?”**
The short answer: **Not always.**
**Let’s understand what each active does:**
- **Retinol** (Vitamin A) is great for anti-aging, acne, and skin renewal.
- **Vitamin C** brightens the skin and boosts collagen.
- **AHAs (like glycolic acid)** and **BHAs (like salicylic acid)** exfoliate the skin, improve texture, and unclog pores.
Each of them is a skincare *hero* on its own. But when combined without caution, they can become skin’s worst enemy.
**Why mixing actives can backfire:**
1. **Irritation overload**
Using too many strong actives together can cause dryness, burning, redness, peeling, or breakouts—especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.
2. **pH clashes**
Vitamin C works in an acidic environment. Retinol prefers neutral pH. Using both in the same routine can make both less effective.
3. **Barrier damage**
Over-exfoliating with AHAs/BHAs, then layering retinol? That’s a fast track to a damaged skin barrier and increased sensitivity.
**Safe Mixing Guide: What goes with what?**
- **Morning:**
- Vitamin C + Sunscreen = Great combo!
- Avoid adding acids or retinol here.
- **Night:**
- Retinol + Moisturizer = Good pair for skin repair.
- AHAs or BHAs can be used 2–3 times a week on alternate nights.
**Never mix all three in one routine.** Split them across AM/PM or different days.
**Dermatologist’s Tip:**
Always **patch test** new products. Start slow. And when in doubt, keep it simple. Your skin doesn’t need a 10-step routine. It needs consistency and care.
