Wearing Helmets Daily? Avoid These Skin & Scalp Issues
By Dr. Mohd Rizwan Khan, MD (Dermatology)

Wearing a helmet daily is essential for safety — no doubt about that. But if you’re noticing acne on your forehead, itchy scalp, sweat rashes, or even hair fall, your helmet might be part of the problem.
At our clinic in Shahjahanpur, we see bike riders, delivery boys, office commuters, and even school students facing common skin and scalp issues caused by daily helmet use.
Let’s understand what’s happening — and what you can do to prevent it.
⸻
π Common Skin and Scalp Problems Due to Helmet Use
1. Forehead Acne (Helmet Pimples)
Sweat gets trapped under the helmet padding, especially during hot and humid days. This leads to clogged pores, bacteria buildup, and breakouts — usually called “mechanical acne”.
2. Itchy Scalp & Dandruff
Helmets don’t allow ventilation. So, your scalp sweats more. This moisture + heat = perfect condition for fungal infections and seborrheic dermatitis.
3. Hair Fall
Constant friction of helmet against hair can lead to traction alopecia (hair breakage or thinning due to pulling). Also, poor scalp hygiene can weaken hair roots.
4. Skin Rashes Around Chin and Cheeks
Helmet straps that rub on skin repeatedly can cause friction rashes, pigmentation, or even folliculitis (infected hair follicles).
5. Bad Odour from Scalp and Helmet
Sweat-soaked inner lining of helmets is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, leading to an unpleasant smell and possible fungal scalp infections.

✅ Tips to Protect Your Skin & Scalp While Wearing Helmets
✔️ Use a Clean Cotton Head Wrap / Helmet Cap
It acts as a protective barrier between your scalp and helmet. Wash it daily.
✔️ Clean Your Helmet Lining Weekly
Remove the inner pads if possible, and wash them. Let them dry fully before reuse.
✔️ Apply a Lightweight Moisturiser or Sunscreen
Before wearing your helmet, especially around the forehead. It reduces friction and protects skin from irritation.
✔️ Don’t Wear Helmet on Wet or Oily Hair
This traps more bacteria and worsens scalp issues. Always dry your hair before wearing a helmet.
✔️ Wash Your Face & Hair After Long Helmet Use
Use a gentle anti-acne face wash and a scalp-purifying shampoo to clean the sweat, dirt, and oil.
⸻
𧴠Recommended Products (General Guide):
• Face: Salicylic acid-based cleansers or niacinamide serums for acne-prone areas
• Scalp: Ketoconazole shampoo (if there’s itching/dandruff) once or twice a week
• Skin: Non-comedogenic sunscreen with matte finish to avoid greasiness
