“How to Choose the Right Water Temperature for Washing Your Face”

“How to Choose the Right Water Temperature for Washing Your Face”

By Dr. Mohd Rizwan Khan, MD (Dermatology)

Let’s get real – have you ever wondered if the water temperature matters while washing your face?

Yes, it does. A lot more than we think.

At our clinic, many patients ask —

“Doctor, should I use cold water or warm water?”

“Does hot water clean better?”

Or — “My skin feels dry after face wash, am I doing something wrong?”

Let’s break it down in simple words.

🔥 Hot Water: Feels Nice, But Bad News for Skin

Hot water can feel relaxing, especially during winters. But for your face, it’s not the best idea.

What hot water does:

• Strips off natural oils

• Disrupts your skin barrier

• Makes your skin dry, itchy, or irritated

• Triggers redness or flare-ups in sensitive skin

It may feel like it’s “cleaning deeper,” but it actually makes your skin more prone to dryness, breakouts, and even early aging signs.

🧊 Cold Water: Refreshing, But Not Enough to Clean

Cold water can calm the skin and reduce puffiness, but it’s not ideal for daily face cleansing.

What cold water does:

• Temporarily tightens skin (but doesn’t shrink pores)

• Doesn’t remove oil, dirt, or makeup effectively

• Not great if you’re using face wash with active ingredients (they won’t dissolve properly)

It’s fine for a rinse in the morning or after sweating, but don’t depend on it to actually clean your face.

💧 The Winner: Lukewarm Water

Just right. Not too hot. Not too cold.

Why lukewarm water is best:

• Cleans the skin properly without damaging it

• Helps dissolve oils and face wash effectively

• Keeps your skin barrier healthy

• Comfortable for most skin types – oily, dry, or sensitive

Simple test: If your water feels slightly warm on the wrist but doesn’t steam or sting — it’s the right temperature.

🙋‍♂️ Dr Rizwan’s Tips:

1. Use lukewarm water for both cleansing and rinsing your face.

2. Avoid washing your face with hot shower water. It dries out the skin faster.

3. Don’t over-wash. Twice a day is enough for most people.

4. After washing, gently pat your skin dry — don’t rub.

5. Moisturize right after cleansing to lock in hydration.

🚿 Bonus: Seasonal Advice

Winter? Water tends to be hotter – be mindful and cool it down a little.

Summer? Lukewarm or slightly cool water is soothing and perfect for sweat removal.

👨‍⚕️ Final Word from Dr. Rizwan:

“Your face wash and creams matter — but so does your water. Small changes in daily habits can prevent long-term damage to your skin.”
