Why You Shouldn’t Pop Pimples – With Photos to Prove It

Why You Shouldn’t Pop Pimples – With Photos to Prove It

It’s tempting. It’s satisfying. But it’s also one of the worst things you can do to your skin. Here’s why pimple popping is a bad idea—and what happens when you keep doing it.

Let’s be honest…

You see a whitehead.

It’s sitting there, staring back at you in the mirror.

Your fingers twitch. “Just one pop,” you tell yourself.

But what comes next?

• Redness

• Swelling

• Pain

• Maybe even a scar

As dermatologists, we see the damage every single day. So let’s explain why you should never pop a pimple—with real facts, not fear.

What Happens When You Pop a Pimple

When you squeeze a pimple:

1. You push bacteria deeper inside the skin.

2. The walls of the pore can break, causing more inflammation.

3. New pimples form around the original one.

4. The area becomes red, swollen, and painful.

5. It often leaves a scar or dark spot (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

And it doesn’t even heal faster. It takes longer to go away because of the trauma.

Types of Damage We See from Pimple Popping:

1. Acne Scars

These are permanent dents or raised marks on your face, like:

• Ice pick scars

• Boxcar scars

• Hypertrophic (raised) scars

2. Pigmentation

Even if you avoid scarring, you’ll probably see:

• Brown spots

• Dark patches

• Redness that lingers for weeks

3. Skin Infections

Squeezing with dirty hands or tools can introduce more bacteria.

This leads to:

• Boils

• Pus-filled painful nodules

• Worsening of acne

4. Worsened Acne Spread

Pimple popping often spreads oil and bacteria to nearby pores.

What started as one zit becomes a cluster.

What to Do Instead

Let’s say you have a pimple.

Instead of popping, try this:

Apply an ice cube to reduce swelling.

• Use a spot treatment with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

• Apply a pimple patch to keep bacteria out.

• Leave it alone. Trust the process. It will heal faster than if you interfere.

If You’ve Already Popped It…

Don’t worry. Here’s how to minimize the damage:

1. Wash the area gently with mild cleanser.

2. Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic cream.

3. Avoid makeup on that spot until it heals.

4. Don’t pick the scab. It protects the healing skin underneath.

5. Apply sunscreen daily to prevent dark spots.

Dr. Rizwan’s Pro Tip:

“Every scar tells a story. But acne scars? Most of them are avoidable.

If you feel tempted to pop a pimple—just think of the long-term mark it might leave. One second of satisfaction is not worth months of regret.”
