Common Mistakes Patients Make After a Laser or Peel – Don’t Do These!
At our clinic, we often say: What you do after a treatment is just as important as the treatment itself.
Laser sessions and chemical peels can do wonders for your skin – but only if you follow the aftercare properly.
Unfortunately, many patients unknowingly make small mistakes that delay healing, cause breakouts, or even lead to pigmentation.
Here are the most common post-treatment mistakes we see – and why you should avoid them at all costs:
⸻
❌ 1. Touching or Scrubbing the Skin
Why people do it:
Peeling starts after a few days and it’s tempting to “speed it up” by rubbing or pulling off flaky skin.
Why it’s a mistake:
Your skin is healing. Scrubbing or peeling it off forcefully can cause redness, scarring, or even dark spots (PIH – post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
What to do instead:
Let your skin exfoliate on its own. Apply a gentle moisturizer to keep it hydrated. That’s all it needs.
⸻
❌ 2. Skipping Sunscreen
Why people do it:
“It’s cloudy today”, “I’m staying indoors”, or just forgetting altogether.
Why it’s a mistake:
Your skin becomes extra sensitive to sunlight after lasers or peels. Even a few minutes of unprotected exposure can cause tanning, redness, or stubborn pigmentation.
What to do instead:
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50) every morning—even if you’re indoors. Reapply if you step out or sweat.
⸻
❌ 3. Using Active Ingredients Too Soon
Why people do it:
Going back to acids, retinols, or exfoliating face washes just 2–3 days after treatment.
Why it’s a mistake:
These products can irritate your already-sensitive skin and lead to peeling, burning, or breakouts.
What to do instead:
Wait until your skin has fully recovered (usually 5–7 days or as per your doctor’s advice). Use only what is prescribed for aftercare.
⸻
❌ 4. Not Moisturizing Enough
Why people do it:
Some patients think moisturizers will clog pores or worsen acne.
Why it’s a mistake:
After a peel or laser, your skin needs hydration to heal. Dry skin heals slower and may get flaky or irritated.
What to do instead:
Use a non-comedogenic, soothing moisturizer twice a day (or more if needed). Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or panthenol are excellent.
⸻
❌ 5. Expecting Instant Results
Why people do it:
They assume one session will give flawless skin.
Why it’s a mistake:
Most treatments work in multiple sessions, and results show over time—not overnight.
What to do instead:
Follow the plan. Trust the process. And always share any concerns with your dermatologist instead of stopping midway.
⸻
✅ Final Advice from Our Clinic:
We’ve seen amazing results with lasers and peels—but only when the aftercare is done right.
π¬ When in doubt, always ask us.
π We give all our patients clear do’s and don’ts after every session, but if something feels off—don’t wait to tell us.
Because good results don’t just happen in the clinic.
They continue at home.
