Popular Ingredients That Can Burn Your Skin If Misused
π From Dr. Rizwan’s Skin Cosmetic & Laser Clinic, Shahjahanpur
⸻
These days, everyone wants “active ingredients” in their skincare – things that actually work.
You see words like:
✔️ Glycolic Acid
✔️ Salicylic Acid
✔️ Retinol
✔️ Vitamin C
✔️ Benzoyl Peroxide
They’re all over YouTube, Instagram, and even pharmacy shelves.
But here’s something we see in the clinic every week:
π Burns, rashes, peeling, redness — because of wrong use of these popular ingredients.
Let’s talk about some common ones that can damage your skin if not used properly.
⸻
π₯ 1. Retinol (Vitamin A)
Good for: Anti-aging, acne, pigmentation
But can cause: Redness, peeling, irritation, sun sensitivity
Mistake people make:
• Applying too much
• Using it daily from day 1
• Not using sunscreen in the day
• Mixing with Vitamin C or AHA/BHA
Tip: Start 2–3 times a week, at night only. Use moisturizer after. Never use with exfoliating acids.
⸻
π₯ 2. Glycolic Acid / Lactic Acid / AHA
Good for: Glowing skin, removing dead cells
But can cause: Chemical burns, dry patches, sensitivity
Mistake people make:
• Using acid peels at home
• Applying daily
• Not doing a patch test
Tip: These are powerful. Use under doctor’s advice. Never use on broken or irritated skin.
⸻
π₯ 3. Salicylic Acid (BHA)
Good for: Oily skin, blackheads, acne
But can cause: Over-dryness, peeling, burning
Mistake people make:
• Using face wash + toner + cream all with salicylic acid
• Using with scrubs
• Applying near eyes
Tip: Use 1 product with salicylic acid, not 3 together. If your skin feels tight, reduce use.
⸻
π₯ 4. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
Good for: Brightening, reducing spots
But can cause: Tingling, redness, burning
Mistake people make:
• Applying on damp or broken skin
• Using very high percentage (20%+)
• Storing in sunlight or open bottle
Tip: Start with lower strength (10–15%). Store in a cool place. Use in the morning under sunscreen.
⸻
π₯ 5. Benzoyl Peroxide
Good for: Acne treatment
But can cause: Dryness, burning, redness, bleaching of clothes
Mistake people make:
• Applying too thick
• Using without moisturizer
• Mixing with retinol
Tip: Use only on pimples or acne-prone areas. Apply moisturizer after. Start with 2.5% or 5% strength.
