Acne Around Periods – What to Expect in Teenage Girls”

“Acne Around Periods – What to Expect in Teenage Girls”

👧🏽 Periods & Pimples – Is There a Connection?

Yes, absolutely. Many teenage girls start noticing breakouts a few days before their period — especially on the chin, jawline, or cheeks. This is called hormonal acne, and it’s one of the most common things we see in young girls at our clinic.

Let’s break it down in simple terms.

📉 What Causes Acne During Periods?

It all comes down to hormone changes. Around your period, the levels of a hormone called progesterone go up and down. This affects your skin in these ways:

Oil glands become more active

Pores get blocked more easily

• Skin becomes slightly inflamed or sensitive

The result? Small pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, or even painful cysts around your period days.

🗓️ When Does Period Acne Usually Start?

Most girls get acne:

7–10 days before their period starts

• It fades away during or after the period

• And this cycle repeats every month

This pattern is a clear sign that hormones are involved.

🧴 How to Manage Period Acne at Home

Here are some tips we give our teenage patients:

✅ Stick to a basic skincare routine:

• Gentle face wash (twice a day)

• Light moisturizer

• Sunscreen in daytime

✅ Avoid:

• Over-washing your face (makes it worse)

• Picking or squeezing pimples

• Using mom’s anti-aging or fairness creams

✅ Extra help:

• Use a salicylic acid-based face wash if skin is oily

• Apply a small amount of pimple gel on spots at night (consult your skin doctor for the right one)

🚨 When to See a Dermatologist

Not all acne is mild. Come visit us if:

• Pimples leave dark marks or scars

• Acne is painful or spreads to the neck/back

• Over-the-counter creams don’t help

• Acne is affecting self-confidence or mood

We understand how sensitive this age is. At our clinic, we talk openly with both girls and parents — and offer safe, age-appropriate treatments.
