🪒 Starting to Shave? Here’s What Teenage Boys Should Know

Many teenage boys start shaving in their school or early college years. But if you’re already dealing with acne or oily skin, shaving can sometimes make things worse — more cuts, bumps, and even breakouts.

This blog is for all the boys (and their parents) who want to keep their face clean, smooth, and healthy without turning shaving into a nightmare.

👦 Why Teenage Skin Is Different

• Teen boys usually have more active oil glands

• That means more sweat, more oil, more clogged pores

• Add a razor to that, and you get:

• Tiny nicks or cuts

Irritated skin

• Acne that spreads or gets worse

✋ Common Problems We See in Clinic:

1. Shaving over active pimples → causes pain, bleeding, and infections

2. Using dirty razors → spreads bacteria

3. Dry shaving (no foam or gel) → leads to redness and cuts

4. Over-shaving → increases skin irritation and rough texture

✅ Dr. Rizwan’s Tips: How to Shave Safely With Acne-Prone Skin

1. Wash your face first

Use a gentle face wash to remove dirt and oil before shaving. Never shave on dirty skin.

2. Soften the beard

Use lukewarm water and a mild shaving gel or foam. It makes the hair softer and reduces razor friction.

3. Use a clean, sharp razor

Change razors every 4–5 uses. Don’t borrow razors. One blade = fewer chances of cuts.

4. Shave in the direction of hair growth

No need to go “against” the grain for a closer shave. That increases cuts and chances of ingrown hairs.

5. Skip areas with active pimples

Let those spots heal. Shaving over them will only make them worse.

6. Post-shave care

• Wash with cold water

• Dab gently with a soft towel

• Apply a non-alcoholic, soothing moisturizer

🚫 What to Avoid

Aftershaves with alcohol – they sting and dry out your skin

Scrubbing face hard before or after shaving – worsens acne

Shaving every day if not needed – rest days help skin recover

📍 When to Visit a Skin Doctor?

Come to the clinic if:

• You’re getting regular razor bumps or cuts

• Acne is getting worse after shaving

• You have dark spots or scars due to shaving injuries

• You want advice on safe shaving products for oily or acne-prone skin

We help teenage boys build a simple shaving and skincare plan that keeps them confident without making them feel like they’re doing too much.

Final Note from Dr. Rizwan

Shaving is a part of growing up — but doing it the right way matters. Whether you’re 14 or 18, learning proper skincare early helps you avoid long-term skin issues.
