“Should You Use Skin Creams Prescribed for Someone Else?”
By Dr. Mohd Rizwan Khan | Dr. Rizwan’s Skin Cosmetic & Laser Clinic, Shahjahanpur
⸻
🚫 Short Answer: Please Don’t.
Many people come to our clinic with skin reactions, rashes, or worsened acne — and when we ask what they used, the answer is often:
“Doctor, my sister had this cream at home, so I thought I’ll try it too.”
Or…
“My friend used this tube for similar pimples, so I borrowed hers.”
Sounds familiar?
Let’s explain why using someone else’s prescribed skin cream can actually damage your skin more than helping it.
⸻
🔍 Not All Skin Is the Same
Even if two people have pimples, pigmentation, or dryness, their:
• Skin type (oily, dry, combination)
• Skin sensitivity level
• Medical history
• Daily routine
• Lifestyle (sun exposure, job, diet)
…are all different.
That means the treatment also needs to be different.
⸻
🧴 What’s Actually Inside That “Magic Tube”?
Most people don’t realize how strong some prescription creams are. Here’s what we often see:
1. Steroid Creams
• Used wrongly, they can thin your skin, cause redness, or even trigger pigmentation.
• Over time, they stop working and leave your skin more damaged.
2. Fungal Creams Mixed With Steroids
• Very common in over-the-counter tubes.
• Gives temporary relief but makes fungal infections come back worse.
3. Acne Creams (Retinoids or Benzoyl Peroxide)
• Great when prescribed right.
• But can cause peeling, burning, or severe dryness if misused.
4. Hydroquinone or Other Pigmentation Creams
• Can help with melasma or dark spots.
• But incorrect use leads to patchy skin, rebound pigmentation, or uneven tone.
⸻
😟 What Can Go Wrong?
• Redness
• Rashes
• Pimples getting worse
• Uneven skin tone
• Permanent skin thinning
• Increased sensitivity to sun
Many patients come to us after using the wrong cream — and by then, it takes longer time and more money to fix it.
⸻
✅ What Should You Do Instead?
• If you have any new skin concern, visit a skin doctor.
• Even if it looks the same as someone else’s problem, your skin’s solution may be different.
• Keep a photo or record of what you used before. It helps us plan better treatment.

🙋♂️ From Dr. Rizwan:
We understand – sometimes it’s tempting to try what your friend or relative used, especially if they “got results.” But remember, what helped their skin might harm yours.
You won’t give your child another person’s medicine just because they had the same fever. Then why take that risk with your skin?
So next time someone says “Use my cream, it worked for me,” – just smile and say:
“I’ll check with my skin doctor first.”
