Sunscreen in Monsoon – Still Needed or Not?

Sunscreen in Monsoon – Still Needed or Not?

“It’s cloudy outside. Do I still need sunscreen?”

If you’ve ever asked this question during the rainy season, you’re not alone.

Many people think sunscreen is only for hot, sunny days. But as dermatologists, we can tell you — UV rays don’t take a holiday during monsoon. In fact, you might be skipping sunscreen at the exact time your skin still needs it.

Here’s why sunscreen is still a must in monsoon season (and how to pick the right one).

☁️ Clouds Don’t Block UV Rays

Even when the sky is grey and overcast, up to 80% of UV rays can still reach your skin. These invisible rays are responsible for:

• Skin darkening and tanning

• Premature ageing (fine lines, wrinkles)

• Hyperpigmentation

• Sun allergies

• Increased risk of skin cancer

So, even if the sun isn’t visible, UV exposure is still happening.

🌧️ Monsoon = More Humidity, More Oil, More Breakouts

Many people stop using sunscreen in the rainy season because they feel:

• It makes their skin greasy

• It clogs their pores

• It causes acne

That usually happens when you’re using the wrong type of sunscreen. The right one will feel light, matte, and comfortable — even in sticky weather.

🧴 What Kind of Sunscreen Is Best for Monsoon?

Here’s what we recommend at our clinic:

SPF 30 or more – Yes, even on cloudy days

PA+++ or higher – Protects from UVA (ageing rays)

Gel-based or water-based formulas – Especially for oily or acne-prone skin

Non-comedogenic – Won’t clog pores

Water-resistant – In case you get caught in the rain

Skip: thick, heavy creams or overly greasy sunscreens. They’ll feel uncomfortable in humidity.

⏱️ When and How to Apply

• Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before stepping out

• Use a coin-sized amount for your face

• Don’t forget neck, ears, hands, and feet if exposed

• Reapply every 3-4 hours if outdoors or if you sweat a lot

Even if you’re staying indoors near windows, a light layer of sunscreen is still helpful. UV rays can pass through glass too.

❓What If I Already Have Pigmentation or Tanning?

Then sunscreen becomes even more important.

In our

clinic, we see many patients with melasma, tanning, or uneven skin tone that gets worse during monsoon — often because they stop using sun protection.

We also combine sunscreen with de-pigmentation treatments and maintenance creams to speed up recovery and prevent further damage.

👨‍⚕️ Final Word from the Dermatologist

Sunscreen isn’t a “summer-only” thing.

It’s a year-round skin essential — even during monsoon.

Think of it like brushing your teeth. You don’t stop brushing when it rains, right?

Similarly, don’t skip sunscreen just because the sun’s hiding.

Your skin will thank you later — with fewer spots, less tan, and a healthier glow.
