What I Wish Every Patient Knew Before Coming to a Skin Doctor

What I Wish Every Patient Knew Before Coming to a Skin Doctor

When new patients walk into our clinic, they often bring along not just their skin concerns—but also confusion, fear, and a whole lot of misinformation. And that’s completely okay. But as a dermatologist who sees 100+ patients a day, I often wish I could tell every person just a few things before they arrive.

So here it is—honest advice from your skin doctor, before you even step into the clinic.

1. Google Is Not a Dermatologist

Please don’t diagnose yourself from internet photos. Acne, fungal infections, eczema, rosacea—they can all look similar but behave very differently. A 10-minute skin consultation will give you a far more accurate answer than hours of online research. What you read online may be right for someone, but not for you.

2. Photos Help, Filters Don’t

If your skin concern comes and goes (like redness, rashes, or swelling), photos can help us understand what we’re dealing with. But make sure they’re unfiltered, in natural light, and close enough to see texture. Fancy filters or beautified apps can hide what we actually need to assess.

3. We Don’t Judge Skin – Or You

Whether it’s acne scars, dullness, hair loss, or dark circles—nothing surprises us. You don’t need to feel embarrassed. Skin conditions are common, and we’re here to help, not judge. Your story matters more than your appearance.

4. Treatment Takes Time – Be Patient

There is no magical “1-day cure” in dermatology. Good skin takes commitment, consistency, and care. If we give you a routine for 6 weeks, please don’t give up in 6 days. Skin cells take time to renew. Let the treatment work.

5. Don’t Start 5 New Products Before Your Visit

Many people try everything—home remedies, random creams, influencer recommendations—before coming to a dermatologist. This often worsens the issue or hides the original problem. If you’ve already used 5 things, your skin may be irritated and confused, and harder to treat.

6. Bring Your Products or Photos of Them

We often ask, “What are you using on your face?” And the answer is usually: “I don’t remember the name.” If you carry your current skincare or click a photo of your product labels, it helps us understand what might be working—or harming—your skin.

7. Some Questions Are Better Asked Than Googled

Yes, you can ask us anything—whether it’s about facewash, sunscreens, shaving, waxing, makeup, pigmentation, fairness creams, or even diet and sleep. The more open you are, the better advice we can give you. And no question is “silly.”

8. Skin Is Connected to Your Lifestyle

Stress, poor sleep, junk food, dirty pillowcases, smoking, dehydration—they all affect skin health. If we ask you about your lifestyle, it’s not to interfere but to understand the full picture. Skin doesn’t work in isolation.

9. Don’t Hide the Truth – We’re on Your Side

If you’ve picked at your acne, tried steroids from a chemist, or followed home remedies you saw on Instagram—please tell us honestly. We’re not here to scold you. We just need to know so we can correct things safely.

10. You Deserve Personalized Care

Your skin is unique. What worked for your friend or cousin might not work for you. That’s why we create personalized plans—after seeing your skin, understanding your concerns, and checking your history.

Final Word:

Skin problems are more common than people think. But good skin is possible—with the right advice, realistic expectations, and a little patience.

So, if you’re planning to visit a skin clinic—walk in without fear, and with the confidence that you’re taking the right step.

And yes, if you’re ever in Shahjahanpur, my team at Dr. Rizwan’s Skin, Cosmetic & Laser Clinic is always ready to help you feel better in your skin.
