“Do You Really Need an Eye Cream?” – Honest Opinion from a Dermatologist

“Do You Really Need an Eye Cream?” – Honest Opinion from a Dermatologist

By Dr. Mohd Rizwan Khan, MD (Dermatology)

Let’s be honest.

The skincare market is filled with products — and eye creams are always in the spotlight. But the real question is:

Are they actually necessary, or just marketing hype?

Here’s my dermatologist take — based on what I see in clinic every day.

👀 What Makes the Under-Eye Area So Special?

The skin around your eyes is:

Thinner than the rest of your face

More sensitive

• Has fewer oil glands (so it gets dry easily)

• More prone to dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines

So yes, this area needs special care

But does that mean you must buy a separate product?

Let’s break it down.

✅ When Eye Creams Make Sense

You may benefit from a separate eye cream if:

• You have dry under-eyes even after applying your regular moisturizer

• You notice early fine lines or crow’s feet

• You struggle with dark circles or puffiness

• You wear concealer daily and want smoother under-eyes

In these cases, using a gentle, hydrating eye cream can help — especially if it has ingredients like:

Hyaluronic acid (for hydration)

Caffeine (for puffiness)

Peptides or retinol (for fine lines)

Niacinamide or Vitamin C (for dark circles)

❌ When You Don’t Need Eye Cream

You probably don’t need a separate eye cream if:

• Your regular moisturizer is gentle and hydrating enough

• You’re in your 20s with no specific eye concerns

• You’re using a well-formulated serum that’s safe for the eye area

Many face moisturizers and serums are already safe for the under-eye, unless they contain strong actives like AHAs or high-concentration retinoids.

🧴 What We Recommend at Our Clinic

At Dr. Rizwan’s Skin, Cosmetic & Laser Clinic, here’s what we usually suggest:

Simple moisturizers with no fragrance or alcohol are often enough

Targeted eye creams only when patients have a specific concern

Sunscreen around the eyes is a must (yes, even on cloudy days!)

• And… Don’t rub your eyes roughly while applying any product

🧑‍⚕️ Dr. Rizwan’s Honest Verdict:

“Eye cream is not always necessary — but in some cases, it’s useful. Don’t fall for fancy packaging or celebrity ads. If you’re concerned about your under-eye area, talk to a dermatologist first. The solution might be simpler than you think.”

📌 Bottom Line:

• Eye creams are not a must for everyone

• Use one only if your skin needs it — not just because it’s trending

• Always be gentle around your eyes

• And if under-eye issues are bothering you, let’s have a quick consult. We’ll check what’s actually causing it — and suggest the right fix.
