“Skin Care Routine: Order, Timing & What You Might Be Getting Wrong”

“Skin Care Routine: Order, Timing & What You Might Be Getting Wrong”

By Dr. Mohd Rizwan Khan, MD (Dermatology)

Aap achhe skincare products le rahe ho. Daily use bhi kar rahe ho.

But fir bhi result slow hai ya kuch change hi nahi dikh raha?

It’s possible the problem isn’t what you’re using…

It’s the way you’re using it.

Let’s talk about the correct order and timing of skincare. Because even the best products don’t work if applied wrong.

🧴 Step-by-Step: The Right Skincare Order

Morning Routine:

1. Face Wash

– Use a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type

– Removes oil, dirt, and sets a clean base

2. Toner (if needed)

– Only if you feel your skin needs that extra refresh or hydration

3. Serums

– Targeted ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide, etc.

– Wait 30–60 seconds before the next step

4. Moisturizer

– Locks in hydration and creates a smooth barrier

5. Sunscreen (must)

– Last step in morning routine

– SPF 30 or higher, even if you’re indoors

Night Routine:

1. Face Wash

– Cleans off sunscreen, makeup, and pollution

2. Serum or Actives

– Retinol, AHA/BHA, etc. (as per your skin needs)

– Give it 1–2 minutes to absorb

3. Moisturizer

– Repairs your skin overnight

– Can be heavier than your day cream

4. Spot Treatment (if any)

– Apply only on concerned areas, after moisturizer

⏱️ Timing Matters More Than You Think

• Don’t layer products too quickly – Let your skin absorb one before the next

• Wait at least 30 seconds to 1 minute between steps

• Use active ingredients like retinol at night, not in the day

• Apply sunscreen 15–20 minutes before stepping out

❌ Common Skincare Mistakes We See in Clinic

Using face wash too often (3–4 times a day) – dries out skin

Not using sunscreen regularly – even on cloudy days

Mixing all actives at once – causes irritation or purging

Applying retinol on wet skin – increases risk of redness

Layering too many products – your skin doesn’t need 7 steps

💡 Pro Tip by Dr. Rizwan:

“Skin doesn’t need 10 products — it needs the right product, at the right time, in the right order. That’s where the magic lies.”

🧴 For Example – A Basic Routine for Beginners

Morning:

✔️ Cleanser → ✔️ Vitamin C Serum → ✔️ Moisturizer → ✔️ Sunscreen

Night:

✔️ Cleanser → ✔️ Retinol or Niacinamide → ✔️ Moisturizer
