“Why ‘Normal’ Skin Still Needs Care”

“Why ‘Normal’ Skin Still Needs Care”

By Dr. Mohd Rizwan Khan, MD (Dermatology)

Let’s get one thing clear — “normal” skin doesn’t mean perfect skin.

Many people with normal skin skip basic care because they don’t see pimples, dryness, or pigmentation. But here’s what I tell my patients:

👉 No visible problem doesn’t mean no need for protection.

Even normal skin faces pollution, sun damage, aging, and lifestyle stress — and if you ignore it today, it can trouble you tomorrow.

Let’s break it down.

💡 First, What Is “Normal” Skin?

Normal skin usually means:

• Not too oily, not too dry

• Pores aren’t very visible

• Occasional pimple here or there

• No major redness or flaking

• Feels comfortable most of the time

Sounds great, right? Yes — but that doesn’t mean it’s maintenance-free.

🌤️ Normal Skin Still Gets Damaged

Just like a healthy car needs oiling, even balanced skin needs care. Why?

1. Sun damage happens silently

– UV rays break down collagen and can cause pigmentation over time

– Even if your skin tone looks even now, it might not stay that way

2. Pollution affects everyone

– Dust, smoke, and particles clog pores and speed up aging

3. Aging is universal

– Fine lines, dullness, uneven tone… all can start showing in late 20s or 30s

4. Seasonal changes impact all skin types

– Monsoon = fungal issues

– Winter = tightness/dry patches

– Summer = tanning and clogged pores

5. Neglect invites problems

– No moisturizer? Skin starts to overcompensate and get oily or dull

– No sunscreen? Pigmentation and early wrinkles come knocking

✅ Basic Skincare Routine for Normal Skin

You don’t need 10 steps. But you need consistency.

Morning:

1. Gentle face wash

2. Light moisturizer (gel or lotion)

3. Sunscreen (ALWAYS)

Night:

1. Face wash

2. Moisturizer

3. Optional: Antioxidant serum (Vitamin C or niacinamide) 2–3 times/week

🙅‍♂️ Mistakes People With Normal Skin Make

• Skipping sunscreen because “I don’t tan”

• Using harsh exfoliators for the “glow”

• Ignoring mild pigmentation or spots

• Not moisturizing in humid weather

• Not visiting a dermatologist unless there’s a visible problem

🧴 Recommended Ingredients for Normal Skin

You don’t need too many actives. Stick to:

Hyaluronic acid – for hydration

Vitamin C – for glow and protection

Niacinamide – to keep skin smooth and balanced

Ceramides – for barrier protection

💬 Dr. Rizwan’s Message:

“Normal skin is a gift — don’t take it for granted. A little effort today saves you from spending heavily on treatments later. Prevention is always cheaper and better than cure.”
