“When Skin Creams Cause Whitening – Why That’s Not a Good Sign”

“When Skin Creams Cause Whitening – Why That’s Not a Good Sign”

By Dr. Mohd Rizwan Khan | Dr. Rizwan’s Skin Cosmetic & Laser Clinic, Shahjahanpur

☁️ “Doctor, This Cream Made My Skin White Instantly. But Now My Face Feels Weak & Thin…”

This is something we hear often in the clinic. People apply a cream they bought from a local shop or parlour. It shows “quick whitening” in 2–3 days. They feel happy at first. But slowly, the skin starts turning red, patchy, sensitive, or full of pimples.

Let’s clear one thing today:

If your skin is becoming white too fast, something is wrong.

It’s not a glow. It’s damage.

🧪 What Causes This Instant “Fairness”?

Most such creams contain steroids or strong bleaching agents.

They:

• Reduce inflammation quickly

• Shrink blood vessels temporarily

• Bleach the upper layer of the skin

So yes, the skin looks “lighter” for a few days — but it’s not a real change. It’s just the effect of a medicine, not natural skin health.

❗ Why This Is a Big Problem

Here’s what we commonly see after continued use:

1. Thinning of Skin

Your skin starts becoming paper-like and sensitive.

2. Redness & Pimples

Steroids suppress your immunity. As soon as you stop the cream — acne, fungal infections, and bumps show up.

3. Perioral Dermatitis

A condition around the mouth where small red bumps appear after stopping steroid creams.

4. Permanent Pigmentation

Ironically, these creams later make skin darker in patches. We call it steroid-induced pigmentation.

5. Steroid Addiction

The skin becomes dependent. The moment you stop, the face flares up — and you run back to the same cream.

💬 But Doctor, Everyone in My Area Is Using It!

Yes. Sadly, these creams are sold:

• In local beauty stores

• At salons

• In unlicensed clinics

• By well-meaning friends who don’t know better

Even though they say “herbal” or “ayurvedic” — many are illegal mixtures of steroids, mercury, hydroquinone, or antifungals.

🧴 Common Names of These Whitening Creams (Be Careful!)

We won’t name specific brands here, but if you see:

• No prescription needed

• No proper labeling

• No dermatologist guidance

• Too-good-to-be-true claims like “Instant whitening in 3 days”

…then please be careful.

✅ How to Whiten Skin the Healthy Way

Everyone wants brighter, clearer skin. That’s natural. But the safe way is:

• Use sunscreen daily (this alone helps prevent dullness)

• Add vitamin C or niacinamide in your routine

• Eat fruits, hydrate well, and sleep on time

• Visit a dermatologist if you have pigmentation or dullness

👨‍⚕️ Dr Rizwan’s Note:

“If a cream is whitening your skin too quickly, don’t be happy. Be alert. Good skin treatments take time, but they give you healthy results — not just fake fairness.”

We’ve treated so many patients suffering from damage caused by such creams. It takes months to repair what one tube of the wrong cream can spoil.
