What We Wish Everyone Knew Before Trying DIY Home Peels

“What We Wish Everyone Knew Before Trying DIY Home Peels”

Let’s be honest:

You saw a reel. Or a YouTuber applying something that looked fancy. They called it a “home chemical peel” or “fruit acid glow-up”. And suddenly you’re tempted to try it too – maybe using lemon, vinegar, baking soda, or even buying an online peeling kit.

Please read this before you try.

As skin doctors, we’re not against skincare at home. But peels are not like face packs.

Every week, we see patients walk in with redness, burns, peeling, or worsened pigmentation – all from a DIY peel gone wrong.

Here’s what we wish everyone knew before trying it at home:

❗1. Acids Are Not Harmless – Even Natural Ones

• Glycolic, lactic, salicylic, citric acid – these are strong chemical exfoliants.

• Just because something is fruit-based doesn’t mean it’s gentle.

• Even a few extra minutes of application can burn your skin.

✅ What works in a clinic is controlled, timed, neutralized, and monitored.

⛔ What you do at home may end up damaging your skin barrier.

❗2. Not All Skin Types Can Handle Peels

Some skin types – especially Indian skin – are more prone to pigmentation and irritation.

• If your skin is sensitive, dry, acne-prone, or recently tanned, peeling it may make it worse.

• If you have a history of eczema, rosacea, or active pimples, peels can lead to dark spots, redness, or infections.

👉 We always assess skin before deciding which peel suits a person – sometimes we don’t even do it if the skin barrier isn’t ready.

❗3. Home Peels Can Leave Long-Term Damage

Burns from home peels may:

• Turn into brown or black patches

• Cause redness and raw skin

• Leave the skin more sensitive to sun and pollution

And these side effects don’t go away with a cream. Some patients need months of treatment just to reverse one peel mistake.

❗4. Online Kits Aren’t Customised for You

Those peel kits you order online?

• They don’t know your skin type.

• They don’t tell you what to apply before or after.

• They don’t offer help if your skin reacts.

It’s like wearing shoes without checking size – and then blaming your feet when they hurt.

✅ So What Should You Do Instead?

• If you’re curious about peels, come talk to us. We explain:

• Whether you even need a peel

• Which type suits your skin tone and issues

• What your skin needs before and after a peel

• We use dermatologist-grade peels in clinic with proper safety.

Or if you prefer to stay home, let us help you with a safe exfoliating routine – using mild cleansers or AHA/BHA toners under guidance.

👨‍⚕️ Final Thought from Dr. Rizwan:

Just because you can do something at home doesn’t mean you should.

Your skin is not a science experiment.

Peels can give great results – if done right. But done wrong, they can create months of skin stress.

Always ask before you apply. One consultation can save you many regrets.
