“When to Visit a Dermatologist (Not a Salon) – A Simple Checklist”

“When to Visit a Dermatologist (Not a Salon) – A Simple Checklist”

These days, many skin services are offered at salons – facials, detanning, blackhead removal, even “skin lightening” and “peels.” But not every skin concern should be treated at a salon.

Sometimes, you need medical care, not a massage.

So how do you know when to visit a dermatologist instead of a salon? Here’s a simple, clear checklist to guide you – straight from our clinic experience.

✅ Come to a Dermatologist, not a salon, when…

1. Your Skin Problem Is Repeating or Lasting More Than a Week

• Same pimple keeps coming in the same spot

• Rashes that go but come back again

• Any redness, dryness, or peeling that doesn’t improve

🔎 “If it’s not going away on its own in 7–10 days, it’s time to see a doctor.”

2. You Tried a Cream and It Made Things Worse

• Dark patches increased

• Skin became thinner, red, or itchy

• New acne or bumps appeared after using something OTC or suggested by someone

🧴 A common mistake we see is using steroid creams from chemists or parlours. These may give temporary glow – but can badly damage your skin.

3. You Have Active Acne, Pigmentation, or Skin Sensitivity

Salons are fine for relaxing facials, but:

• Active pimples should not be massaged

• Pigmentation needs clinical treatment, not bleach

• Sensitive skin may react to fragrances or products used in parlours

🩺 A doctor can check your skin type and suggest the right plan – which may or may not involve a peel, laser, or medications.

4. You’re Seeing White or Dark Patches on Skin

• Sudden white patch? Please don’t scrub or bleach it.

• Dark patch growing? Don’t just apply detan cream.

⚠️ This could be a fungal infection, pigmentation issue, or early sign of something else. Needs proper diagnosis.

5. You’re Losing Hair or Getting Dandruff That’s Not Normal

• Hair thinning from scalp or front

• Itchy flakes that don’t go with shampoo

• Bald patches or sudden hair fall

💇‍♀️ Hair spa won’t solve this. It needs medical evaluation and blood tests if required.

6. You Tried Many Remedies but Nothing Is Working

• Home remedies, salon packs, YouTube ideas – nothing helped?

• Tried multiple creams and now your skin is more irritated?

👨‍⚕️ That’s a sign your skin needs professional help – not more experiments.

So When Is a Salon Okay?

✅ Relaxation facial

✅ Hair wash or styling

✅ Simple clean-up for non-sensitive skin

✅ Waxing or threading – if skin is not broken or inflamed

But if your skin is already troubled – better to consult first, pamper later.
